Staying the Course: How running shapes the approach to change?
Have you ever thought about how running and business benefit each other? Jesper Hallengreen is an enthusiastic runner with several marathons under his belt. He sees a clear line between long distance running and success in business transformation.
We asked Jesper a few questions about how he combines these two elements in his life.
What’s something from your personal life that you’re especially proud of?
“One thing I’m especially proud of is being a marathon runner. Running long distances has taught me a lot about patience, structure, and mental discipline. It’s something I’ve committed to over the long term, and it plays a big role in how I show up in all areas of my life.”
Have you noticed any parallels between running and how you approach transformation work?
“Absolutely. Marathon training and business transformation actually have a lot in common. Neither offers quick wins, success comes from being consistent, staying resilient, and keeping your eyes on the long-term goal.
Just like in a race, transformation requires adaptability and the ability to push through when momentum slows or unexpected challenges arise. It’s about finding a rhythm and sticking with it, even when it’s tough.”
Can you share a moment in a project where that mindset helped you push through a tough challenge?
“With one of my roll-outs of SAP Concur (Travel & Expense system) in Latin America, we faced tremendous challenges with their highly customized local ERP and the strict local finance regulations. The runner’s mindset taught me to acknowledge that even though we do not have a solution right now, if we keep making small progressions, solving one complex topic at a time, at some point we will see the finish line.”
